A Job Search Can Be Scary

For many of us, a job search is about the scariest thing in the world.

The fear of failure hangs in the air, whether it is writing a resume, networking with people you don’t know or interviewing.

How confident are you that your next interview will result in a job offer?

  • Got it in the bag – 100%?
  • Pretty sure of yourself at 75%?
  • Maybe you think it is a 50-50 proposition?

According to one of our ministry leaders, Jay Litton, founder of WowInterview.Com, interview success rates average 10%. No wonder job searches are scary.

Dressing the Part

Whether it’s picking a costume for Halloween or getting ready for a job interview, what you wear reflects who you are.

Just for fun, let’s look at the top 10 most searched for costumes on the web and see what tips we can take away.

#10 — Dinosaur: If you are age 55 or more, don’t dress for comfort. Get and stay physically fit, and wear clothes that fit.

# 9 — Clown: If you like bright colors and lots of makeup, tone it down for interviews. Appropriately conservative clothing and grooming is best.

# 8 — Star Wars: So many characters to chose from: Darth Vader, Han Solo, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, Luke Skywalker and more. Dress for the role you are to play.

# 7 — Batman: You may have an alter ego like Batman, but you are better advised to appear as Bruce Wayne, respected community leader.

# 6 — Witch: Stay away from all black costumes and scraggly hair. Be nice. Say “Thank you” and “Please.”

# 5 — Wonder Woman: What more is to be said. Everybody would hire Wonder Woman, except for protective, insecure bosses.

 # 4 — Pirate: Hook for a hand and a patch over one eye is dramatic, but you want to do nothing that suggests you are a crook or a raider.

# 3 — Superhero: The secret to appearing as a superhero for interviews is to take examples of what you do best that the employer needs most, like samples of your work, photos or certificates of accomplishments or a proposal.

# 2 — Joker: Again, baggy colorful clothes with too much makeup can be a distraction. While a sense of humor is helpful, being a joker gets tiresome.

# 1 — Harley Quinn: A lead character from the movie Suicide Squad is the most searched for costume this year. Avoid the extreme. Better to stay mainstream.

Wear the Armor of God

No matter what costume you wear, be sure to put on the full armor of God underneath. Imagine getting dressed for an interview like this…

Stand firm therefore,

having girded your loins with truth,

and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith

with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Ephesians 6:13-17

Spiritual “underwear” is more important than physical outerwear. The full armor of God … don’t leave home without it!
