Are You Generous, Really Generous?

The Bible speaks of giving as an essential part of the Christian life.  Nowhere in Scripture is it considered an option only for the wealthy or the super-spiritual.  Generous giving is to be a part of a believer’s way of life.  Everything we do should overflow in an attitude of abundance, not scarcity.

Proverbs 21:26 - “Some people are always greedy for more, but the godly love to give!”

Acts 20:35 “Remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he Himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

Proverbs 11:24-25 - “One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.”

Proverbs 11:25 "A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed."

Luke 21:4 - "All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on."

The Bible goes on to give very specific instructions regarding how we should give, advantages of giving, how much we should give, and to whom we should give.

The Bible tells us that every dollar and every object in our possession really belongs to God, so when we give, we are just acting as agents on God's behalf.  Once we understand this, each opportunity to give serves as an occasion to surrender to the Lord in a deeper way, not only with our finances, but also with our whole life.

As we focus on faithful generosity, remember that giving is not merely another category in your spending plan.  It’s an act of worship, a means of drawing closer to God and one of the privileges we have as believers to join God is sharing His love and kindness.
