Many people set financial goals and struggle to keep them because they are trying to do it all themselves.
I refer you to Solomon who long ago gave us this helpful advice in Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?
Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”
So what do you need to do to have that cord of three strands?
First, invite the Lord to be your primary source of wisdom, counsel and support. Specifically commit to reading your Bible and praying for financial wisdom every day.
Next, if you are married, ask your spouse to participate with you. I find spouses who never talk about this subject together are actually surprised to learn that with a little kindness and humility towards one another, they can actually make a very good team. Don’t give up if your spouse is resistant, keep loving them and praying for them to have a change of heart.
If you are single, consider asking three folks you know to serve as your voluntary Financial Advisory Board. Be sure they have no conflicts of interest and will meet once or twice a year or more as needed to review your plans and progress.
