Ask God to Help You Trust Him

Don’t jump to conclusions—there may be a perfectly good explanation for what you just saw. —Proverbs 25:8 (msg)

The other day, I went to the zoo with my girlfriend Ashley. Generally, when an activity involves my girlfriend and a lot of walking, it results in holding hands.

But on this particular day, I noticed that while we were searching for the Giant Panda Habitat, she didn’t reach out for my hand like she usually does. So when we walked from there to the Great Cats exhibit, I reached out for hers. We held hands for a few steps and then she let go.

Yikes! I thought. Is she mad about something? Doesn’t she like me anymore?

I have this tendency to take a little event and jump to the worst-case scenario. At this point, you should also know that I’m an amputee and walk with crutches. So holding hands is slightly more difficult for us because my hand is always at the fixed height of my crutch handle.

By the time we left the zoo, I was in full freak-out mode, assuming our relationship was over. I tentatively asked Ashley if she wanted to go out for a bite to eat.

“Definitely,” she said, “but first can we stop by my apartment so I can change into flats? The heels on these shoes make me too tall to be able to hold your hand.”

I laughed.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

Because it was nothing.

Please help me trust You, God, rather than jumping to my own anxious conclusions.
