I was reading a short devotion taken from Charles Spurgeon’s writings last night, and stumbled on this quote. His words are quite relieving for me because it explains a bit of the tug I feel that I’m never able to put into my own words, but literally sense their presence all day and night.
It’s that feeling of knowing the good I want to do, that I just can’t quite make happen. It’s the desire to come home and have that perfect evening with my children where I’m completely patient, loving, and cheerful. It’s that conviction…that I know I should give up my extra thirty minutes in the office to make sure I can relieve my wife from that long day at the helm, but ignore. You know, right? The sense that you want to share Jesus more with your neighbors and find ways to serve them, but the little you’ve tried seems awkward or not enough.
I could go on and on, because the weightiness of God’s call on my life seems too big for me to accomplish. I literally feel inadequate. But what I love about this quote is that Spurgeon reminds me and you that this feeling is a blessing from God. It’s like God puts us in a situation and complete awareness of our total dependence on Him.
The uneasiness and desire to be like Christ, but ever failing to hit the mark…..
It is a blessing because it pushes me towards the father when I fail.
It is a blessing because it is the single largest motivating force for good in my life.
It is a blessing because it reminds me that one day I’ll finally be like Him.
