Breathing

Kids don’t like to smell each other’s breath. Parents actually hear complaints like, “He’s breathing on me!” and “Her breath smells like death!” So, you might be surprised to hear that twice in the Bible people got breathed on -- and they were both good things.

“Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the earth and blew the breath of life into his nostrils. The man became a living being” (Genesis 2:7).

When God created animals, he simply formed them and they started living. To create people, though, God chose to breathe into Adam. From that moment on, humans walked around with the breath of the living God inside them.

The second time happened after Jesus rose from the dead. He was about to go back to heaven (to get your room ready) and he told his disciples, “‘Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.’ After he had said this, he breathed on the disciples and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit’” (John 20:21,22). The Holy Spirit gave them the strength and courage they would need to go to people in different cities and countries, telling them that their Savior had come.

The first time God breathed in a person, life began. When Jesus breathed on the disciples, he gave them the Holy Spirit. That kind of breath gives you life.

Chomp on this!

When you were baptized, the Holy Spirit put faith in your heart.

How does the Holy Spirit use you now to spread the news about Jesus?
