Calls You by Your Name

“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing” (Psalm 23:1 NIV).

I’m sure that at some point you’ve been called the wrong name. Maybe your parents call you by your sister’s name or your brother’s name or—even worse—your dog’s name.

One of the best songs about Jesus is a song you learned when you were a kid. (Although the song isn’t only for kids; adults love it too.)

I am Jesus’ little lamb.

Ever glad at heart I am.

For my Shepherd gently guides me,

Knows my needs and well provides me,

Loves me every day the same,

Even calls me by my name.

The Lord is your Shepherd. He loves you. He guides you. He completely provides for you. You have everything you need. When you’re sad, you hear him gently say your voice, as if he is hugging you. When you’re happy, the way he says your voice cheers along with you. When you are wandering away, there’s a good chance he says your name with that little bit of warning...the same way your parents tell you to step away from a hot stove. No matter what, though, God is your Good Shepherd. You are his little lamb. Your heart is happy.

Dear Shepherd, thank you for guiding me, knowing what I need, and giving it to me. Your love for me doesn’t change from day to day, depending upon how I act. Instead, you call me, every day, by my name and remind me that I am yours. Thank you. Amen.
