2 Chronicles 33:1-25
Jeremiah is thrown into a culture of chaos and asked to be faithful in a situation that’s unlikely to improve. The story of King Manasseh in 2 Chronicles 33 gives the biblical backdrop for this chaos: his reign was rooted in rampant idol worship (Isthar and the cosmos) and bloodshed (including child sacrifice).
While it’s unlikely any of us will be called to be prophets of God, it’s highly probable we’ll at some time or another find ourselves thrown into a situation of chaos that’s unlikely to improve. It could be working for a company that’s rapidly sinking, a marriage where someone wants out and refuses to get help, a drug-addicted loved one who struggles for years, or a terminal illness that progresses slowly. We, too, get called into deeply difficult situations that challenge our faith.
Today, you may be the person who just got bad health, job, or family news. As you lift your hands to God, consider the One Big Question: Are you, (or when have you been) in an impossible situation that feels totally beyond the limits of your capabilities and faith? Share your feelings with your circle or a trusted friend, then discuss God’s promises in Jeremiah 1 and how they apply to your situation.
