I can remember when I was a kid I would always wish for the day when I would be a grown up and I could do whatever I wanted to do. I wouldn’t have anyone telling me what to do. I wouldn’t have to do chores. I could just do whatever I wanted to do. Boy, did I miss that one.
I have more people now than ever telling me what I should be doing and my chore list never seems to end. Most of my days are not exciting or thrilling. I get up and do what has to be done. I go home. I get up the next morning and start all over again. But if you are paying attention, you will notice there is a rhythm to the routine, a certain grace about every day chores. Love isn’t always a passionate kiss. Sometimes it’s remembering to pick up the laundry or it’s cleaning the kitchen while you wait for your spouse to get home. Sometimes, when I smell clean clothes, I feel good.
That was the way my mom showed me she loved me. She took care of me. Too many times we try to add unnecessary drama to our lives, because in our culture, there is no sin greater than boredom. Yet, if we pay attention to Jesus’ life, we see a different way to live. He had plenty time for prayer. He spent most of His time with His friends and yet, He managed to get all of His work done. And He walked everywhere He went! Slow down. Pay attention. Life is trying to teach you something in the mundane. God’s glory is revealed in the smallest details. The patient pace allows you to savor even the smallest of wonders.
