Chickens love to be together. They work together to find food and keep each other warm. As they spend the day going in the coop, heading back out, scratching in the yard, looking for food, and taking dust baths, it seems they can’t stand to be apart for more than a few minutes. Whatever one does, the others do. They also stick together because it’s safer that way—possums, foxes, and coyotes would love to have them for dinner. At the end of the day, when the sun starts to set, they make a line and head back home for the night.
God wants his children to act like chickens. He wants them to flock together, to not willingly be apart from others who love Jesus. On your own, you are an easy target for temptation. When you flock together with other believers, they encourage you to stay strong, they remind you where to find spiritual food, they support you when you are sad, and they remind you that you aren’t alone. They encourage you to get in line because it’s almost time to go home.
Take the advice God gives you: “We should not stop gathering together with other believers, as some of you are doing. Instead, we must continue to encourage each other even more as we see the day of the Lord coming” (Hebrews 10:25).
If you see another believer who’s been hanging out on his own, invite him to come back into the flock. It’s an awesome place to be.
