Recently ÜberFacts tied coffee consumption to an increased frequency of sex. Being a lover of all things espresso, I quickly passed on the information—only to later realize we live in a day that requires more clarification than it does permission.
The Bible describes the heady combination of love and sexual expression as an “awakening.” The Song of Solomon repeatedly (three times) warns the daughters not to awaken or stir love before it is time!
Oh, let me warn you, sisters in Jerusalem, by the gazelles, yes, by all the wild deer: Don’t excite love, don’t stir it up, until the time is ripe—and you’re ready. (Song of Solomon 2:7)
So how do you answer a world which claims there is something wrong if single women are not waking up their sexuality?
1. Know you’ve got the power! 1 Corinthians 10:13 promises us, “No test or temptation that comes your way is beyond the course of what others have had to face. All you need to remember is that God will never let you down; he’ll never let you be pushed past your limit; he’ll always be there to help you come through it.” God will back your pursuit of godliness!
2. You have a choice. God’s mercy is new every morning. Each and every day you can move forward into mercy or remain trapped within the confines of your past. Today you can choose the path of virtue, no matter where the paths of yesterday led you.
3. Fan the right flame. Sex is a gift, but if you are single it is not one you should be opening! But there is a gift on your life you can stoke into flame: “And the special gift of ministry you received when I laid hands on you and prayed—keep that ablaze!” (2 Timothy 1:6) Another version says “fan it into a flame.” We can choose what fires we ignite by what we fan and what we feed. Reading the Word, prayer, and surrounding yourself with like-minded people will set your passion for God ablaze, while at the same time cooling and setting to rest your sexual passions.
