Guilt Trip to Avoid: I do not like change.

Our youngest son asked us to meet his family for supper at a nearby county fair. For me, changing plans poses a challenge. Besides that, a darkening sky threatened rain, fall evenings tend to be chilly, and we would have to pay an entrance fee just to eat supper there. I didn't want to go. However, I jumped at a chance to see grandchildren, so off we went.
Before Terry’s family arrived we toured exhibits then rested on a bench. A close friend from high school came by, and we enjoyed catching up. Suppers at the Fair are great fun. One grandchild ate a funnel cake, a sugary fried-dough concoction; the other ate French fries, while the adults enjoyed specialty sandwiches. After supper, Terry’s family headed to a demolition derby and we headed toward the car. However, as we passed a pavilion, we saw friends competing in a talent show and joined the audience. By the time we left the show, Terry’s family left the grandstand, and we rejoined them for ice cream.
What a delightful evening. And I had almost missed it. I’m learning not to be so quick to say “no” to opportunities God’s grace brings my way. I’m learning to be flexible, more willing to change plans.
Take the Joy Ride: I wonder if Deborah was surprised by Barak’s invitation. As you read scripture, watch for how God unexpectedly moved in the lives of people. Then watch for God to bring an unexpected opportunity across your path and embrace it—even though it’s not scheduled. Consider what might have happened if these biblical saints had said “no” and thank God that they didn't.
