Dessert Is Coming

Which of these things is different?

  1. Ice cream.
  2. Cake.
  3. Cookies.
  4. Pie.
  5. Candy.
  6. God’s Word.

That was a trick question. The correct answer is G. All of the above.

In Psalm 119:103, we hear that God’s Word is just as yummy as any dessert: “How sweet the taste of your promise is! It tastes sweeter than honey.” Think about dessert for a minute. (Yum!) Your parents won’t let you have dessert first, will they? Nope. You need to eat your protein, your vegetables (blech!), and the other stuff your mom says is healthy before you get to have the yummy stuff. So you get through the whole meal because you know the best part is waiting for you at the end.

This earth is full of things you don’t necessarily like either. Feeling lonely, fighting with friends, having trouble at school are all things you have to deal with. You get through those because you know that God has good things waiting for you: peace, joy, and living forever in heaven.

As you deal with the problems you face here on earth, remember that dessert is coming. God’s promises are sweet.

Dear Father, sometimes I’m just so sad in this world. Thank you for giving me your promises to be with me, to help me, to work things out for my good, to take me to heaven. Your promises are so sweet; they are better than dessert. Thank you also for giving us actual food that is delicious too. We know that all things—even dessert—are gifts from you. Amen.
