Disability Insurance for Stay-at-Home Moms

Dave Ramsey has written several New York Times Bestsellers on personal money management and is considered one of the foremost experts on the topic. I’m a big fan of Dave’s. However, sometimes I disagree with Dave.

While surfing the Web the other day I stumbled upon this Q&A exchange between Dave Ramsey and one of his followers regarding disability income insurance for stay-at-home moms and I was surprised by some of the inaccuracies, so I’d like to set the record straight.

The letter and Dave's response as published on TownhallFinance.com, May 11, 2010:

Dear Dave,

Do stay-at-home moms need disability insurance?

Sarah

Dear Sarah,

Yes, they do. Unfortunately, they can’t get it right now. Under current law, you must have an earned income in order to receive disability insurance.

Now, it’s possible to get disability insurance if you have a business at home. In that case, you’d need to show two years’ worth of tax returns to prove that your self-employment was actually generating an earned income.

My wife’s been a full-time mom for 25 years, and I know how hard she works and how much she does every day. Believe me, if she could get disability insurance, we’d buy it in a second!

Well Dave, there actually is a way now.

The ability to get disability insurance as a stay-at-home mom has nothing to do with current law. It has everything to do with an insurance company’s willingness to offer the coverage and take on the risk.

The good news is that brightpeak financial believes in the value of mom and we’re happy to offer her disability insurance – even if she doesn't earn an income. In fact, brightpeak financial is the only company in America to offer a stand-alone disability insurance policy to stay-at-home moms.

We believe that if you’re caring for the kids, the house and everything in between, it most definitely qualifies as an “occupation.” (And an incredible one at that!)

Dave, give us a call and let’s see if we can get your wife insured. Click below to get started with us today
