Very few people would say, “I like my life exactly as it is; I want nothing to change.” Well, at least not for an occasional short season when all seems to be going well. No, at any given moment, we generally want something to be better, easier, or more fulfilling. We are creatures almost constantly in search of improvement.
We can have something better than improvement, of course. We can have transformation. But we need to get really honest with ourselves about the potential for change. Do we really want it? Are we aware of the costs? Are we interested in a magical, Cinderella-style transformation, or are we willing to venture into a more realistic—and lasting—process? That’s usually how change comes. Yes, major events can prompt sudden shifts in our lives, but even those have to be maintained. Change comes to those who are willing to be uncomfortable. Maybe for a while.
The desire for change is good. The fantasy of easy, magical, momentary change is not. You really can become new, but you may be stretched in the process. If you really want it—in any area of life—ask. God will take you seriously. And he will want you to take it seriously too.
