Don't You Catch on?

[Jesus] got into a boat again and crossed to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. The disciples had forgotten to take any bread along and had only one loaf with them in the boat. Jesus warned them, ‘Be careful! Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod!’ They had been discussing with one another that they didn’t have any bread. Jesus knew what they were saying and asked them, ‘Why are you discussing the fact that you don’t have any bread? Don’t you understand yet? Don’t you catch on? Are your minds closed? Are you blind and deaf? Don’t you remember? When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets did you fill with leftover pieces?’ They told him, ‘Twelve’” (Mark 8:13-19).

The disciples had just watched their Teacher work miracles—and yet they were still focused on finding food. They hadn’t caught on that everything they needed here on earth would be provided. Jesus was telling them to pay attention so they wouldn’t believe the lies the Pharisees were telling.

Sometimes, even though we know God provides for us, we forget to trust him. We worry more about our clothes and our food and our broken toys than we do about the temptations we face.

Let’s focus more on Jesus so we can say, “We understand. We caught on. We remember. Thank you, Jesus, for providing for us.”
