BUT BE SURE TO FEAR THE LORD AND SERVE HIM FAITHFULLY WITH ALL YOUR HEART; CONSIDER WHAT GREAT THINGS HE HAS DONE FOR YOU. — 1 SAMUEL 12:24
No one likes sweeping dust bunnies from under the fridge, scrubbing grout, or filing taxes. Sometimes the boss will assign a grueling task, or worse, and extremely tedious one. It's tempting to expend the minimum effort required and get on with the better things in life. This can happen in relationships as well—we manage the minimum amount of closeness and small task without any real depth or connection.
However, as God's children we are called to a higher standard. Not just to "get things over with," but to do all things to His glory. Practically, this means doing our best in whatever task or goal we pursue, knowing that He is the final inspector of our work, tasks both big and small.
So, should we scurry to scour the oven until the metal squeaks for mercy? No, we don't work out of fear or cold duty (though sometimes those are the motives that compel us), but because we desire to please God, knowing how much He loves us. The way we do the "little things" reveals for whom we labor—for us? For our employers, family, or friends? We may benefit from our efforts, but ultimately our work is for our Father.
Let's pray:
Father God, You see all of my work. Please forgive me for when I have complained, and help me do my best in everything and do it out of joy in You. Amen.
