Exalting God Only: John the Baptist

The Bible gives us examples of many who heard the call to exalt God and serve others, some who paved the way for Jesus' coming, some who followed in His footsteps. For example, God greatly used John the Baptist to prepare the way for Jesus. As Jesus' ministry began to grow, John humbly stepped into the background, knowing that his work was complete. John's commitment was to exalting God, not himself.

“You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him.’ The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete. He must become greater; I must become less.”—John 3:28-30

Prayer: God, use us to lead others to Jesus like John did. Show us our role as witnesses. Let our words and example inspire others to look to Jesus, in whose name we pray, amen.
