“When God is about to do something great, he starts with a difficulty,” wrote Armin Gesswein. “When he is about to do something truly magnificent, he starts with an impossibility.” Of course, with God there’s no difference between a difficulty and an impossibility, as nothing is either difficult or impossible for him. But this quote fits the dynamics of how God works in our lives. The bigger the problem, the greater his solution becomes—and the more his work seems to accomplish.
The implications for us are huge. When we encounter a difficulty, our natural response is to get discouraged. But if we know how God works, it should be to get excited. Something great is about to happen. A trial is not a hindrance to his work; it’s the perfect platform for him to show who he is.
That generally only happens when we respond in faith and prayer. In other words, his miraculous work is rarely automatic; we have to ask and believe. And sometimes we have to persist in the asking and believing through long delays and unexpected twists. But God does respond, and impossibilities do have to bow to who he is. When your circumstances become oppressive, smile. The deliverer is doing something in them that will make them extremely worthwhile.
