I started drooling the second I entered my friends’ house. On the table sat three oddly shaped plates piled high with cinnamon-roasted sweet potatoes and crispy Brussels sprouts. They smelled delicious! But as good as the food looked and smelled, I knew our talk would be even better. Mike was a seminary graduate student with the gift of teaching. And he and his wife Meredith enjoyed inviting friends over to discuss the Bible and spiritual issues. They love to see the lives of others change as a result of learning biblical truth.
Motivated by the joy of sharing spiritual insight, those with the gift of teaching not only want to know as much as possible about what they are studying, but they also want to share what they learn with others. Detailed and thorough (Luke 1:4), teachers are inquisitive by nature. They care deeply about their subjects and their students (official or informal), and long to impart wisdom accurately so lives can be changed.
The disciple Luke is an excellent example of one with the gift of teaching. He begins his Gospel by explaining how he had investigated the prophecies Jesus fulfilled as well as His claims to be the Messiah. Luke was very detail-oriented and it shows in his reporting.
If you or someone you know has the spiritual gift of teaching, here are three roles within the body of Christ where your talents and skills may be utilized:
- Decision Counseling/Guest Services - Any team where you can invest in leading people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ is perfect for you. Seasoned Christians make great decision counselors. Or if you’re new to serving in the church, guest services is a great way to begin. You’ll have the opportunity to learn as you assist both church members and non-members alike. You’ll also be able to follow through with the people you meet and answer any questions they have.
- Small Group Leader -This role puts you in a position of spiritual leadership where your examining mind will thrive. You’ll enjoy knowing that others have heard the truth.
- Writer/Speaker - Like the disciple Luke, your gift enables you to communicate effectively and in a way that encourages learning. As a writer or speaker, your ability to present God’s teachings in an understandable and impactful way will offer others the opportunity to enter into a relationship with Christ.
If you’re already exercising your gift of teaching, thank you for investing time studying the Word of God and discipling others. You are making a difference in this world—and for the kingdom of God.
