What does freedom mean to you? Each year as we celebrate the 4th of July, I am reminded that it means a lot more than a day off work and colorful firework displays.
Throughout our history, Americans have fought to maintain the freedoms we enjoy today: freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and many others.
Independence shouldn’t be taken for granted. Men and women sacrificed their lives so we can have the benefits of a free nation.
While I thought about the costly price of physical freedom, I couldn’t help thinking that spiritual freedom came at an even greater cost. The Creator of the universe – God’s only Son – was willing to come to a sin-cursed world to live a perfect life and become the sacrifice for the sins of mankind.
Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Philippians 2:6-8
All who recognize their sinful condition and accept Jesus’ sacrifice as the payment for their sins, will experience true spiritual freedom.
And spiritual freedom is well worth it:
- No more bondage to sin. Christ came to set us free from our own selfish desires.
- Through the power of Christ we can live unselfishly – serving others.
- An eternity spent with Jesus in heaven.
Have you experienced spiritual freedom? If not, you can be free today: Admit you are a sinner (Romans 3:23) Realize Jesus paid your sin debt (1 Corinthians 15:3-5) Put your faith in Jesus Christ for salvation (Romans 10:9-10,13)
Prayer: Heavenly Father, Thank You for the freedom we enjoy in the United States. I’m so grateful for the spiritual freedom You’ve made possible through the death of Your Son on the cross of Calvary. Help me resist selfishness and live to serve others through Your power. Thank You for the great sacrifice You made for me. Help me share it with others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
