Elsa’s curse accidentally hit Anna—a second time. Now Anna was slowly freezing to death from the inside out. Only an act of true love could save her. (If you haven’t seen the movie Frozen, I’m about to spoil it for you. Sorry.)
In Anna’s last moment, as she is at her weakest, she sees that her former fiancé is about to murder her sister. Anna runs, leaps in front of the sword, and saves her sister’s life. That act of love, though it killed Anna, was the act of love that actually brought her back to life. Now both Anna and Elsa would live.
In real life, Jesus calls that “the greatest love.”
As Jesus was talking about how to love, he told his disciples, “Love each other as I have loved you. This is what I’m commanding you to do. The greatest love you can show is to give your life for your friends. You are my friends if you obey my commandments” (John 15:12-14).
Is Jesus asking us to give up our lives? Yes, maybe. Mainly though, we remember that Jesus is our friend. He showed us the greatest act of love when he gave up his own life for us. He came back from the dead, and now we all get to live together in heaven.
Jesus, thank you for calling us your friends. You ran in front of us and took the punishment we deserved. Thank you for your greatest act of love. Amen.
