God Controls Nature

Do your parents keep the news on when you’re in the room? If so, it can seem like the weather is out of control. You hear reporters talking about “Mother Nature” and her devastating tornadoes, earthquakes, terrible snowstorms, hurricanes, tsunamis, and mudslides.

In the Bible, we learn that when Adam and Eve sinned, the world started to break down. Trees and water and plants and winds were affected too. “Creation was subjected to frustration but not by its own choice. The one who subjected it to frustration did so in the hope that it would also be set free from slavery to decay in order to share the glorious freedom that the children of God will have” (Romans 8:20,21).

Even the created world knows that the way things are is not the way they were meant to be. These signs are reminders that God is going to come back and both we and the world will someday be set free. Until then, we remember that we have a God who created the world and sent his Son who calmed a storm just by saying, “Be still!” He will calm your heart when the frustrated world and weather scares you too.

Dear Father, sometimes the weather scares me. Thunderstorms, winds, hail, lightning, and floods hurt people and damage the world you made. When I’m scared, remind me that you created the world and it is still in your control. I’m also thankful, Lord, that you will give us a new earth when you come back, one that will never scare us again. Amen.
