“Everyone assembled here will know that the Lord rescues his people, but not with sword and spear. This is the Lord’s battle, and he will give you to us!” —1 Samuel 17:47 (nlt)
I got down on my knees and told God this whole thing was way over my head. We didn’t have the money. Not even close. So what in the world were we doing? I was sure the lines got crossed somewhere. I was sure God meant to ask somebody else. Somebody wealthier. Somebody more equipped. This was way over our heads. Way, way over.
Those were the words I repeated to God again and again. Those were the words I spoke to my husband as well. Then we went to church, where our pastor stood up in the pulpit and said, “If you want to be filled with the Holy Spirit, if you want to see God at work in your life, then get in over your heads.”
I looked at my husband. Neither of us said much on the drive home. We were both lost in our thoughts. When we pulled into the driveway, he turned off the ignition and sighed. “We can’t let finances stop us.”
So we didn’t. We filled out the adoption application. Some people looked at us like we were nuts, irresponsible. Occasionally, I found myself wondering if they were right. Until that first check came. “To help with the adoption,” the note said.
More followed, and somehow, without even lifting a finger, we had ten thousand dollars. It was like a promise from God that humbled and bolstered me all at the same time.
