God "Mothers" You

Little girls can mother their dolls for hours. They dress them, comb their hair, carry them around, and put them to bed. They put into practice what they have seen their moms do: kiss their owies, hug them when they cry, tuck them in at night, let them crawl into bed when storms scare them. Those aren’t just things moms do, though. Dads do them too. Your heavenly Father does them too.

In Isaiah 66:13, he says, “As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you.”

God didn’t create this world to be full of sadness, but sin ruined that. Now you know the hurts that come from being left out, from getting into fights with friends, from people teasing you. Not only do you go to your parents, God says, “Come to me, all who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

He wants to hear from you. Tell him about your day, tell him when you are scared, tell him when you feel alone. One of his favorite things to do is to remind you that he loves you and cares about you, that he is always with you and is always there for you.

God, our Father, “mothers” you—for hours, for days, forever.

Dear God, thank you for giving us parents who take care of us here on earth. Thank you for being our Father who mothers us and comforts us. We know that you watch over and protect us. Amen.
