God’s Relentless Search

“The eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His.” (2 Chronicles 16:9 NAS)

These words were spoken to King Asa, who didn’t fit the description very well at the time they were spoken. But they do reveal a profound truth about God and how he deals with people. He isn’t looking for those who have behaved perfectly or who achieve certain accomplishments. He’s scanning the face of the earth for hearts that fully belong to him.

What does that kind of heart look like? It’s constantly inviting God into its musings. It makes decisions based primarily on what he wants, regardless of any other opinions, including its own. It says, “Lord, even if you never fulfill my dreams or never work out my circumstances the way I want, I’m yours.” It implicitly accepts whatever he reveals about himself. It is fully, deeply in love with him, even when it doesn’t understand him.

That kind of heart receives God’s highest honor: his strong support. He is drawn like a magnet to those who are given over to him, who cast themselves recklessly into his arms. He shows up as their supporter, defender, advocate, and strength. Those who run to him find him running even faster to them.
