Godly Dads, Part 2

Our fathers sinned and are no more, and we bear their punishment. Lamentations 5:7 NIV

Godly fathers will try to live moral lives for their families.

The Bible is full of real examples of children, even generations of children, being punished for the sins of the father. I don’t know if the principle is that the punishment for the sins falls upon the children, or if the model the children follow leads them to sin, which brings about punishment. Maybe the children sin just because that’s the way they have been taught to live.

Dear men, if we are going to be Godly fathers then we must begin to live more righteous lives before God and before our kids. We must choose the path of holiness, which Scripture clearly outlines for us. We must begin to take on the mind of Christ.

What father has not said something he shouldn’t have said, only to have his toddler repeat it? Our children will live holy lives more easily if they are raised in an atmosphere of holiness. When we take on the sins of the world around us, we are simply inviting our children to participate.

Take this test as a father. Examine your life for a moment. What actions, thoughts, or motives do you have right now that do not honor Christ? Would you want your kids to be caught doing them?

Oh, Father, make us Godly fathers as we look towards you!
