His Loving Care

Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans. —Proverbs 16:3 (niv)

Our trip to the Museum of Natural History wasn’t turning out as I hoped. The train was crowded, so we couldn’t sit together for the ninety-minute ride to the city. We got lost in Penn Station, and walking to the museum, my son Henry tripped and ended up on his face, crying. By the time we got to the museum, we were pretty worn-out. We walked through the exhibits of dinosaur bones and had fun in the solar system area. We ate lunch and walked through more halls. “I’m tired,” Henry said. “I want to go home.” “We have three more hours before our train leaves,” I explained. We found a bench in the Hall of Human Origins and sat down to figure out what to do.

I thought of my sister Maria. The last time I was at the museum was with Maria and her daughter. We always did family trips together, and even though it’s been four years since my sister died, I could feel myself going to a sad place of If only she were here. I pushed it away and remembered our last trip together.

A woman approached us. “Would you like to go to the Imax movie? We bought tickets for our college class, and there’s a dozen or more no-shows. I’d hate to see them go to waste.”

“Sure!” We perked up and headed over to the movie that would start in ten minutes. Inside the theater, we sat in the comfortable velvet seats. “Look, Mom,” Solomon pointed to the bronze plaque on his armrest inscribed with a person’s name. “What does yours say?” I read the inscription: “Remembering my brother and the glorious days we had in this grand museum.”

Dear Lord, thank You for times like this when I find myself exactly where I’m meant to be ...in the comfort of Your loving care.
