"God’s world—all of it—rings with wonders,” writes John Piper, who then goes on to explain how imagination is a Christian duty because God’s truth is so breathtaking that it’s practically sinful to speak, write, sing, or paint about it in a boring way. If we really want to express truth well, we simply have to have a good imagination.
That’s a problem for some Christians—not because we’re imagination-impaired but because we’ve minimized imagination as pure fantasy, false and empty and not worth our time. It can be all those things, obviously, but the blank screen of our minds can also be filled with truth and God-given vision. In fact, the Bible is full of words and images that provoke our imagination because that’s what God intended for our brains. He wants our thoughts to be consumed with things we can’t see with our natural eyes. His Spirit wants to use our imagination for good.
Let him. Never reject the human imagination as unimportant or inherently bad. Like all media, it can be used for good or evil. Let the Spirit fill you with thoughts of glory, ideas from heaven, wonders of God. Boredom and the Christian life don’t go together at all. His kingdom is an adventure. Live it to the fullest, not only outwardly but in every corner of your mind—especially the most creative ones.
