In Deuteronomy 6:4-5 (NIV) God commands the Israelites: “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.”
The children of Israel used this statement as a pledge to God. They said this pledge twice per day. I have also adopted this practice and say this pledge twice a day. I invite you to join me in doing the same. In making this pledge to God it reminds me of my responsibilities of the things I need to do for others.
It reminds me of families who answer the call to adopt children. Many of the children who need loving families are older, have special needs, and come from abusive backgrounds. Many of these families struggle every month to pay their bills as they live on a modest income. They hope they have some money available to allow their children to participate in Little League or other childhood activities and are unable to set aside funds for emergencies such as car repairs.
These families often refinance their home, take out adoption loans, and engage in fundraising events to help pay adoption expenses.
I have attended concerts and participated in auctions, suppers, and desserts for families who host these activities to help raise the funds needed in order to adopt their child. Often their biological children, sometimes under the age of 10, participate by selling lemonade or other items to raise the necessary funds—eager to help even in the smallest ways. These families are the salt of the earth and a light to the world. These families are making a commitment that changes their lifestyle and impacts their financial future. They are living sacrifices and they're doing it to honor their commitment to God. The next time you are invited to participate in a fundraising event for a family, I ask that you not simply delete the invite but join them in their commitment. Please help these families adopt orphaned and vulnerable children. When you are helping them you follow through on your own pledge and commitment to God.
