How Do You Define Greatness?

“Whoever wants to be great must become a servant.” Mark 10:43 (MSG)

How does the world define true greatness?

  • One way is by a person’s talent. Tiger Woods and Jack Nicholson won the Masters multiple times. Many would say that’s true greatness.
  • Others define greatness by accomplishments that change the world. What Steve Jobs did in leading Apple to produce iPhones, iPods and a multitude of devices has clearly changed the world.
  • Others think greatness is really all about power. And who’s the big enchilada when it comes to power? It’s the President of the United States, the most powerful person in the world!

So, what does it mean to be truly great? Jesus’ definition of greatness is paradoxical. He says the way to be great. He says the way to be great is to be a servant, and the greatest servant of all time is Jesus Christ. When we decide to follow him, he teaches us how to be great – God’s way – in how to serve our fellow man.

Isn’t it extraordinary when a CEO serves as a true servant of those that they are called to lead – that he or she is called a great leader? Think about it this way—have you ever had a boss that cared so much about your success, cared so much for you as a person, that you didn’t want to work for anybody else? That boss is being a servant leader! To care for the success of others more than your own is what Jesus is talking about.

Are you willing to trust Christ when it comes to greatness? Put your trust in Him and let Him teach you what lasting greatness is all about. I promise, if you do, He will use your life to make this world a better place.
