How to Bear the Weight of Your Calling

Lots of people, guys in particular, start going to the gym to build up their bodies—frequently a few weeks before beach time. They want to lose flab and develop muscles that show. And in focusing on outward appearance, they usually go straight for the exercises for shoulders, chest, arms, and legs. Progress is visible there. But they neglect strengthening their core first.

The result? They end up with lots of imbalances, as well as plenty of muscle strains and pulls. Their core can’t handle the weight of their outward progress.

It’s the same for people who try to dream with God, step into their calling, and accomplish great things for him without also strengthening their core. They may end up with visible ministry and impressive fruit, but they usually collapse from a lack of inner strength. They didn’t know their identity, weren’t bathed in the love of God, and proceeded with a “core” that couldn’t handle the weight of their calling.

As you’re moving into the far reaches of your calling—and even after you get there—care for your core. Like Paul, pray “that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being.” (Ephesians 3:16 esv).

Know your true identity. Be saturated in the love of God. Be rooted in all that’s good and true, never desperate for attention or status. Then step fully into the places God has called you, knowing your inner strength can bear the weight of your outer work.
