One of my favorite dinner topics is, “What’s your most embarrassing moment?”
That’s because we all talk about the time that we tripped and fell in front of everyone or when our shorts almost fell off at recess or the time we almost walked into the wrong bathroom. I’m sure you have an embarrassing moment too. Now that it’s over we can look back and laugh, but at the time all we could think was, “I’m so humiliated!”
Jesus’ whole life—from the time he came to earth until he died on a cross—is called his humiliation. Jesus “made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!” (Philippians 2:7,8 NIV).
God, who lives in light, was willing to put aside that glory to grow as a baby inside his mother. Jesus left the mansion of heaven to be born in a manger. The God who has always existed and always will exist was willing to die on a cross.
Jesus was willing to suffer all of this humiliation for us so that we wouldn’t have to be humiliated when we stand in front of God on judgment day. Instead, God will hug us and say, “It’s good to have you home.”
