Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us. (Ephesians 3:20 NIV)
Are you waiting for God to move the mountains or part the waters in your life? Are you looking for a miracle? Yes, God does these things, but how he does them may surprise us. In our quest for his outward intervention, there will be times when he reminds us of something much more personal. He points us back to his power that is at work within us.
If that feels disappointing, perhaps it’s because we’re aware of how little power we have. But that isn’t the point. God doesn’t promise to show us our power; he promises to show us the power available to us by the working of his nature within us. You want a miracle? It might just come through the energy of the resurrection in your own spirit, or through someone else who taps into the energy at work within them. It’s rare that God arbitrarily parts a sea or turns water into wine. But he does endow his people with the vision to expect miracles and to believe he is at work within them to accomplish them. That’s faith. And it requires us to actively participate in what he’s doing.
We are more than poor creatures of dust appealing to an awesome deity to intervene. We are inhabited by the deity himself. If you’re looking for his power, look first within. He does immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine—not only for us, but in us and through us.
