It’s Not That We Don’t Know…

Google’s vision statement says they exist to make information available to everyone.

Now, I know Google has both friends and enemies, but we’ll save that for another blog. My point today is about the false promise of more information.

To be sure, the information revolution has done a lot of good. From medicine to agriculture to online businesses, the Internet has changed the way we live.

But in all of this, there’s a misunderstanding of the human personality. The assumption is that if we can just get people the right information, then they’ll make the right choices and our world will be better.

But if you’ve paid any attention at all to our world, you know this just isn’t true. The problem isn’t information. Most of the time, people know right from wrong.

The problem isn’t more information. The problem is broken desire. We simply want the wrong things. Even when we know a decision won’t be good for us, we’ll make the wrong decision anyway.

Why? Because we want to.

People know smoking is bad, but they smoke anyway. People know driving and texting are dangerous, but they do it anyway.

And while the Internet could have been used for great good, pornography (and it’s not even close) is the biggest business on the web.

This can’t be changed with more information. This isn’t just changing people’s minds. It’s changing their wants. It’s healing our desires.

That healing doesn’t come with more information, but only through a transformation of the heart.

And Google can’t do that. Only Jesus can.
