Jesus Understands You

Chomp on this!

Discuss how you picture Jesus when he was on this earth.

When you pictured Jesus, did you see him as a baby in a manger? Or did you see him walking on water? Or did you picture him hanging on a cross? Raise your hand if you saw him as a kid just like you.

Yes, Jesus was a baby and, yes, he was an adult, but the Bible doesn’t talk about him much as a kid. Well, except for the time he was 12 years old and went to the temple. So we don’t often think about the fact that Jesus had to grow—and grow up. There’s one passage, however, that reminds us: “Jesus grew in wisdom and maturity. He gained favor from God and people” (Luke 2:52).

Jesus had to learn to walk and talk, just like toddlers do. His dad taught him how to be a carpenter, so that meant Jesus had chores to do. He had friends and cousins, which is why his parents didn’t know he was missing when he had stayed at the temple. They thought he was hanging out with the kids his age. He was tempted to get angry with his brothers and sisters. As a teenager, he had to learn and become more mature.

Because Jesus went through every stage of life that you do, he understands you completely. As you grow in wisdom and maturity too, you can talk to him about everything.
