Joy and Delight

Scripture: Psalm 107, 111-114

"How joyful are those who fear the LORD and delight in obeying His commands."
Psalm 112:1b

Let’s take a look at our key verse in a different translation: “Blessed (happy, fortunate, to be envied) is the man who fears (reveres and worships) the Lord, who delights greatly in His commandments.” (AMP)

Did you read the text in parentheses after the word blessed? Take it in again. The words happy and fortunate excite me. I want to be both those things!

The words to be envied, however, make me feel a bit odd. Aren’t we supposed to be content, not envious?

Upon deeper study, I found that envy is a feeling of discontent or covetousness with regard to another's advantages, success, or possessions. That definition gave me an ah-ha moment.

Our lives should be so transparent and reflective of Jesus Christ that others feel discontent with their own life and seek the Lord themselves. Let’s show others a right fear of the Lord and our delight in obeying Him. When we reflect Christ in our words and actions, it creates in others a desire to know Him. Then, their envy will be a holy envy.
