Love Uniquely

God is not impartial. It’s true that he’s no respecter of persons and offers his love and gifts to all who will receive them by faith, but he doesn’t treat everyone the same way. Why? Because not everyone responds to him the same way. We have varying degrees of faith, varying levels of maturity, and varying needs. Like the parent of children at different stages of life and with different personalities and responses, God leads, guides, provides, protects, and addresses us uniquely. And he delights in those who love him, trust him, and listen to him with humble hearts.

What does that mean for you? It means you should never compare your situation to that of others; that God’s treatment of you is right for where you are now; that your role is unique to you and given for a purpose; and that, in spite of your mistakes and shortcomings, you are right where you need to be. But it also means that, like Jesus, you can grow in favor with God (Luke 2:52). You are not stuck in God’s dealings with you.

If you want God to respond to you differently, respond to him differently. You can’t get him to love you any more; he already loves you immensely. But some children show themselves in need of careful correction, and others show themselves to be ready for greater privilege and responsibility. Increase your love, trust, and sensitivity to God, and he’ll treat you accordingly. And it will be exactly right for you.
