Jesus took the punishment that was due mankind for its sins -- that's all of us -- so that we would not have to suffer eternal separation from God. The Father laid our sin on His righteous Son, so that the only way we can possibly miss out and go to Hell is to neglect salvation by refusing to believe in Jesus.
