Acrophobia is defined as a pathological fear of heights. I don’t have that. In fact, I think I have the opposite of that. I love heights. I love being up high. I grew up on a farm with one brother and five male cousins, and I can out climb all of them. I climbed trees, I climbed on roofs, I climbed fences, I climbed poles: I did whatever I could to be as high as I could.
Recently, on my first visit to New York City, I rushed out of the subway station and scanned the skyline. I quickly found the Empire State Building and was excited to make my way to the top – to be as high as I could be.
Yet, despite the freedom and thrill I feel when I’m up high, I’m often very aware of what it feels like to be low. It seems that, no matter how hard I try, I always end up falling.
And while it is true that I have physically fallen (out of trees and otherwise), I have also been emotionally low. I’ve been sad and lonely, I’ve been confused, I’ve been angry, I’ve been deceptive, I’ve been prideful, I’ve been mean. I have discovered over and over in my life that, no matter how much I like being up high, I always end up contacting the ground again in one way or another. I always fall.
Genesis 14:19 is the first instance of many throughout the Bible in which God is referred to as Most High. God never stumbles, He never falls, He’s never prideful or mean. He’s not a just-above-the-tree lines God, a sometimes high God, or a not-so-high God, He is God Most High. Most High. Think about that. He is higher than anyone or anything: higher than our minds can even imagine. He has more power, more might, and more majesty than we can possibly conceive. God is Most High.
I can try to prioritize my life and put other things higher than God. I can act like my friends, my new clothes, or even my own opinions are more important than God, but He will always be higher; He alone can be called Most High.
