Genesis 2:25 says, “And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and they were not ashamed.” Is it possible that this scripture has a deeper meaning than the obvious?
God often uses natural things to express deeper spiritual meaning. For example, the Apostle Paul’s speaks of marriage as a type and shadow of the relationship between Jesus Christ and His bride, the church. (Ephesians 5:30-32) He calls it a great mystery.
I believe the mystery or deeper understanding of verse 25 is intimacy. Intimacy is really and invitation for another person, your spouse, to SEE INTO YOUR HEART. Just as you cannot experience sexual intimacy while clothed, you cannot experience deep heartfelt spiritual and emotional intimacy while clothed in shame.
Shame implies a deep fear of discovery. Perhaps you’ve had this thought; “there are things about me I don’t want my spouse to know; things I’m ashamed of. If my spouse knew the truth, I would be abandoned.” That fear is like a veil that prevents intimacy.
The good news is that you don’t have to live with that fear. Intimacy of the heart with your spouse can be yours when the two of you understand and walk in Covenant Trust. That knowledge will open the door to the heart and destroy the fear that comes through shame.
