My fifth-grade class read Hatchet. When Brian Robeson, a 13-year-old boy, gets stranded in the Canadian wilderness with nothing but his hatchet, he feels completely alone. The pilot that was supposed to take him to visit his dad was killed in a plane crash. Brian was injured by a porcupine, attacked by a moose, hit by a tornado, and missed the rescue plane that was supposed to take him to safety. Brian felt completely alone.
There are times in life when you may feel like you have crashed and are left alone, when you think there is nobody there to listen to you or talk to you. When you feel injured by your friends, attacked by Satan, hit by troubles, and there is no rescue plane in sight, you feel very alone.
In Psalm 23:4, God reminds us that “even though [we] walk through the dark valley of death, because you are with [us], [we] fear no harm. Your rod and your staff give [us] courage.” Just like Brian always had his hatchet, we need to remember that God is always with us—even when we feel alone.
