In the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Dorothy, her dog, and her friends finally—finally!—get into the presence of the Wizard. The enormous head (with no body) sits in the giant, green marble throne and speaks, “I am Oz, the Great and Terrible. Who are you, and why do you seek me?”
Dorothy replies, “I am Dorothy, the Small and Meek. I have come to you for help.”
After hearing Dorothy’s request to take her to Kansas, the Head replies: “You have no right to expect me to send you back to Kansas unless you do something for me in return. In this country, everyone must pay for everything he gets. If you wish me to use my magic power to send you home again, you must do something for me first. Help me and I will help you.”
Your God is nothing like the Wizard of Oz. In fact, he is the complete opposite.
In Hebrews 4:16 we are told, “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” (NIV).
When God looks at you, he sees Jesus’ perfect life and sacrifice. So when you approach your great God on his giant throne with your requests, he doesn’t make you feel small and weak. He treats you like his child. He doesn’t make you fight wicked witches to earn his help. When you ask him to use his power on your behalf, he says, “For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you” (Isaiah 41:13).
