Aug. 19 is World Humanitarian Day. Aid and development organizations and the United Nations celebrate those who have died while serving the humanitarian cause. More aid workers—76— have been killed so far in 2013 than the 65 who died in 2012, according to the Aid Worker Security Database.
Two World Vision workers were killed when a grenade exploded inside its South Darfur, Sudan office in July.
“True humanitarian service demands courage and sacrifice,” says Michael Arunga, emergency communications advisor in East Africa. “Reaching out to vulnerable people, including children who rely on our staff for support in areas like Darfur, is challenging. But, even more, it is rewarding. At the end of the day, it is such brave sacrifices that are helping save this world."
World Vision workers around the world share their motivation to serve others in difficult circumstances. Please pray for aid workers everywhere and the children and communities they serve.
“My heart lifts up with joy when I see a malnourished child get well, stand up, and walk after receiving therapeutic rehabilitation,” says Cyprian Ouma, emergency nutritionist in East Africa.
Lord, we plead for Your mercy on those suffering from lack of food. Help aid workers like Cyprian remain compassionately focused. Sustain feeding and livelihood programs with ample resources.
“As a humanitarian worker, we may not always get the support we truly need because the demands are aplenty in the business of saving lives,” says Zhang Jin, emergency affairs officer in China. “But I sincerely care deeply for disaster-affected communities.”
Lord, protect workers in remote areas — especially in the midst of disaster. Strengthen their relational and logistical support networks so they may give their all when a need arises.

“[During the Japan earthquake and tsunami response] I witnessed humanity at its best — their patience, kindness, and resilience moved me to do everything I can in contributing to them. It is my great blessing to be a part in rebuilding lives and my country," says Mitsuko Sobata, programs officer in Japan.
Lord, you know the heart of every person in the midst of tragedy and disaster. When it seems overwhelming, remind aid workers of your endless, overwhelming love for all people. Help them reflect that through patience, kindness, and joy.
"I think aid work is part of my nature as a human being,” says Maha Hawashin, special projects coordinator in Jordan. “I cannot see people suffering without helping. I want to see changes in people’s lives.”
Lord, You have called all of us to know You. For those You have specifically called to humanitarian work, give them confidence and energy to do the work before them.
“I trust my colleagues, and God is always with us," says Amelia Xavier, communications coordinator in Timor Leste.
Lord, protect aid workers as they traverse rugged or hostile lands to reach the most vulnerable people. May they trust You in all circumstances to bring help and hope in the name of Jesus.
