Love is an expression of goodness. So it’s easy to assume that God’s love implies an overflow of his goodness into our lives. And it does—as he defines goodness. But that’s the problem isn’t it? Our idea of goodness leads us to expect comfort, ease, abundance, and the sense that everything is working out. God’s idea of goodness may not—at least not as constant conditions. He leads us into a life of joy but not ease, of fruitfulness but not without sacrifice. His deep and thorough goodness may take us places we don’t want to go.
Has life surprised you with its level of difficulty? Do you hold a grudge against God for your inconveniences? If so, your expectations were off. At any given moment, there should be some cause for sacrifice in your life—something that costs, something you would not do if it weren’t for your love for God. Not everything is drudgery, of course; in fact, there should be little drudgery in your life at all. But sacrifice? Inconvenience? Perseverance? Yes, all that and more. God may fill your life with roses, but he doesn’t make your bed with them. Following him is a thrilling, adventurous, meaningful, journey—yet a costly one. That’s just how it is.
If you’ve been on a search for convenience, give it up. If you’ve expected your relationship with God to lead you to a place of ease, let go of your expectations. Yes, there are wonderful benefits. But all of them come through sacrifice and perseverance. Enjoy the journey, even the hills. Where you’re headed is worth every step.
