“If any one of you thinks you’re important when you’re really not, you’re only fooling yourself” (Galatians 6:3).
Over 250 years ago, during the Revolutionary War, three men were trying to lift a log into place. It was too heavy for them to lift, but instead of pitching in, their boss just kept telling them to try again. That’s when a man rode in on his horse and said, “Why aren’t you helping them.” The boss said, “I am a corporal.”
The man got off his horse and helped the men lift the log. The man, it turned out, was George Washington, the commander-in-chief, the boss of the whole army. The corporal was fooling himself. Washington, even though he was in charge of everyone, didn’t think he was so important that he couldn’t help out people “beneath” him.
This would be like three first graders trying to lift something as a fourth grader watches and tells them to simply try harder. He thinks he’s too cool to help the little kids. All of a sudden the principal walks by and simply pitches in. The principal knows that even though he’s in charge, he also gets to pitch in and help. The fourth grader is fooling himself.
If you think like the corporal or the fourth grader, you’re fooling yourself too. Jesus simply loves every single person. People who love Jesus look around for ways to serve others. Help a classmate who dropped her books, volunteer to do the dishes, or pick up someone else’s trash. Just as Jesus came to serve, we get to serve too.
