Serving Jesus by Serving Others

How did you serve Jesus today? Sometimes it’s hard to think of something, isn’t it? Maybe you’re thinking, “Well, I didn’t go to church. I didn’t read my Bible, and I forgot to pray.”

Jesus says that you serve him this way: “I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat. I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink. I was a stranger, and you took me into your home. I needed clothes, and you gave me something to wear. I was sick, and you took care of me. I was in prison, and you visited me.” (Matthew 25:35,36).

Umm, but I know you didn’t give Jesus clothes or food, and you definitely didn’t visit him in prison today. That’s when Jesus adds, “Whatever you did for one of my brothers or sisters . . . you did for me” (verse 40).

Oh. When you serve others, you are serving Jesus.

You serve Jesus when you

  • share your lunch,
  • give Christmas presents to a child whose dad is in jail,
  • bring your teacher flowers (or chocolate),
  • visit your elderly neighbor,
  • tell your friend she’s beautiful when she claims she’s ugly,
  • sing at a nursing home, and
  • do your chores without complaining.

Now think again; how did you serve Jesus today?
