Then Philip opened his mouth, and ...preached Jesus to him. —Acts 8:35 (nas)

Eight-year-old Stephen is excited about being a Cub Scout. He loves being part of the pack, having a place in a group of guys; he loves making things and camping and the other activities; he loves the uniform and the special salute and reciting the Cub Scout Promise and the Law of the Pack.

At last week’s meeting, each Scout was given a box of fifty candy bars. Selling candy is the way Stephen’s pack raises money, and each Scout who sells a box receives a kit to make a car for the upcoming Pinewood Derby.

His ten-year-old sister, Maggie, volunteered to help Stephen sell chocolate bars in our building. They rang a few doorbells and staked out the lobby and made seven sales. At this rate, I thought, they’ve got a week’s worth of selling to do. But I hadn’t counted on Maggie’s marketing prowess. The next afternoon she decked Stephen out in his uniform and hit the pavement.

After a half-hour, an excited Stephen and Maggie burst into the apartment. “We sold out!” Maggie shouted.

At this week’s meeting, Stephen got his Pinewood Derby kit—and another box of candy. “I can get credit for summer camp,” he told me. I’m sure Stephen and Maggie can sell this one out too. They make a great team.

Lord, I’m naturally shy, and talking from my heart about my faith has been particularly difficult. When the opportunity arises, help me to share the Good News with Maggie’s skill and Stephen’s enthusiasm.
