The Basics

Acts 2:42-43

They call him the QB Guru. When elite quarterbacks like Ben Roethlisberger, Andrew Luck, Jameis Winston and Cam Newton want to fine-tune their game, the man they go to is George Whitfield, Jr. From having them practice their footwork in the San Diego surf to analyzing every millisecond in their throwing motion, Whitfield teaches quarterbacks to instinctively do the basics in the midst of the chaos of having rushers like Denver’s Von Miller prowling to wrap up their game.

Every good teacher, like George Whitfield, Jr., knows that to succeed you must master the basics, and when it comes to church, Acts 2:42-43 spells out the basics of what a group needs to do when 3,000 baby believers join your church.

“Now they continually devoted themselves to the Apostles’ teaching, to close relationships with one another, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer. Reverence for God was upon everyone, and many wonders and signs were being done by the Apostles.” Acts 2:42-43

In 1973, when Mary and I moved to Midlothian, we joined a circle of about eight families and Midlothian Bible Church was born. These four fundamentals — the teaching of the Word, fellowship, celebrating the breaking of bread regularly, and fervent prayer together became the basics we put into practice. Later, we added the importance of praise and worship mentioned in Acts 2:47. And these are still the basics I need to give attention to today in my personal life and in meeting with fellow believers in church.

LORD, thanks that You showed us at the birth of the Church the basics that can still help us win the game even when rushed by the chaos of life.
