The Key to Receiving

In most cultures, the way to receive gifts is simply to wait for them. They come at birthdays, holidays, and other special occasions; and sometimes it’s okay to ask. But in the kingdom, there’s a better way. If we really want to receive, we need to know how to give. In yet another paradox, the key to getting is giving.

That’s what Jesus said: “Give, and you will receive. . . . The amount you give will determine the amount you get back” (Luke 6:38 NLT). He spoke in the context of forgiveness, but his promise applies to many areas of our lives. You want material provision? Offer it to someone else. You need joy? Give it to others. You crave acceptance? Then accept those around you. Whatever it is you’re looking for, it probably won’t come simply by waiting for it. But according to God’s promise, it will come if you give it away.

It’s hard to imagine how we might increase in abundance by dishing it out, but that’s how it is in the kingdom. So whenever you find yourself in a position of lack, it might be helpful to look in the mirror and see if you’ve held back from those around you. If so, reverse the trend. If you give away what God has given you, he sees. He loves what you’re doing with his gifts, and he will fill you with more of them to enjoy and to share.
